Circle hooks are becoming increasingly popular with anglers around the whole of the UK. They are based on the hooks used by commercial long-liner fishermen and cause a fish to become self-hooked. This happens when the fish takes the circle hook into its mouth and swims away. The circle hook will then slide towards the edge of the mouth of the fish and hook the fish – there is no need to strike, instead, the angler simply needs to reel in. Circle hooks mean more fish are securely hooked and end up landed by anglers, plus these hooks are ideal for conservation-minded anglers fishing on a catch-and-release basis as 90% of fish end up hooked in the jaws, and very few are gut hooked.
